Hands Up

What does being a good self advocate mean to me?   How do I demonstrate this?

"Being a good self advocate means being a good student and worker.  And I need to tell people what they need to know about me."

C.G.,  student, Plainfield East High School

"Being a good advocate means to not only stand up for your disability, but to be a role model for others who are not aware of how to advocate for themselves. I anticipate what I need going into certain situations to avoid as many communication problems as possible. Also, I share many ideas with other students to make them aware that they can easily advocate for themselves."

R.T. student, Lincoln Way North High School

"Being a good self advocate means doing whatever it takes to maximize your ability to communicate effectively with others.  If you exude confidence and comfortableness with who you are, everyone else will be confident and comfortable around you. Do not assume people (should) know when there is a communication breakdown-they are not mind readers.  I feel I am a role model, being a hearing impaired teacher who works with DHH students by demonstrating good advocacy which includes everything from the basic skill of asking for repetition, placing myself in the best spot to lipread and hear, and even utilizing an FM system with my students.  Sometimes we wear each other's FM systems!"
