DHH CHAMPS - Mission and Vision

Mission: To empower DHH teens to advocate and develop self-determination for a successful future.

 

Vision: Participation in CHAMPS will encourage and celebrate Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing teenagers to develop and hone robust self-advocacy skills to achieve their full potential.

What Is CHAMPS?
 

It is a program designed to reward deaf / hard of hearing (DHH) students who demonstrate strong self-advocacy skills and to motivate other students to develop similar skills.

 

CHAMPS has two facets:

  • Annual advocacy activities

  • Annual Luncheon/Event

THE ANNUAL CONTEST
PURPOSE:

  • To Recognize and honor students who demonstrate exceptional self-advocacy skills as they relate to hearing and/or communication.

  • To encourage and motivate other students to develop or continue self-advocacy skills.

  • To encourage and support DHH teachers in their efforts to develop self-advocacy skills in students.

  • Format: Contest format varies each year  (Essays, PowerPoints,  Journal Entries, Videos, for example)

CHAMPS Advocacy Event and Luncheon
PURPOSE:

  • To provide students with an opportunity to meet other students who are strong self-advocates

  • To provide students with an opportunity to interact with successful adults who are deaf or hard of hearing

  • To offer an opportunity for students to socialize with other students who are hard of hearing or deaf

  • To expose students to a program that motivates them to think about self-advocacy and the role that it can play in their current and future lives 


DETAILS:

  • Sit down luncheon with one DHH mentor at each table

  • Program Presentation varies each year but always involves a speaker or speakers who address topics relating to self-advocacy.

  • Interpreters as well as real-time captioning are provided for all presentations.

  • Exhibition booths related to student needs, summer camps, colleges, etc. are provided for students before during and after the presentation and luncheon.
